Whether you’re drinking your joe in the morning to make your brain properly function (ahem, that would be me), or to prep you for your workout, coffee can quickly become a first-thing essential. The thing is, though, there are actually ways to supercharge your coffee to get even MORE out of it than you already are!

Although the VERY first thing I drink in the AM is a large glass of water, plain or lemon water, coffee is my immediate second. But I really wanted to make the most of it. I think I’m a little caffeine sensitive, so I’ve limited myself to only one ‘leaded’ cup in the mornings.

 

Healthy coffee is quickly becoming a sought-after drink as more people get interested in bio-hacking. But as a busy mama, you can try these tips to supercharge your coffee to simply get more accomplished with less caffeine highs than regular coffee. And they’ll boost the already high level of beneficial nutrients coffee has to offer.

 

Healthy Coffee Idea #1: Add cocoa to boost attention span

 

Studies have shown the combination ofย  cocoa and coffee to boost attention spans. Plus it’s full of antioxidants, and may be a mood elevator, helping with depression symptoms. (Not to mention it tastes yummy!)

Healthy Coffee Idea #2: Bulletproof coffee

 

Some people call it butter coffee, some call it keto coffee. Whatever you wanna name it, bulletproof coffee actually has a scientific reasoning to the recipe. The combo of the oils helps control the caffeine spike so that it’s more controlled for the following few hours, plus it helps to better absorb the polyphenols.

Believe me-I know those ingredients make it sound like it tastes awful, but it’s actually pretty tasty. When you blend it (because you have to so the oils are all broken down and distributed), it takes on a frothy texture. I actually found it sort of addicting after having it the first time.

And one other thing–although I follow the bulletproof coffee recipe, I use a different MCT oil than theirs because it can get a bit pricey. This MCT oil is the one I use, and it costs less than the Bulletproof brand.

Healthy Coffee Idea #3: Eliminate the sugar.

 

Sugar (which includes the store-bought creamers!) basically just sets you up for a sugar crash in a just a little while. If you really need to have sweet coffee, try adding stevia. I use the liquid version because some of the powdered ones have corn-derived powdering agents (which are almost always GMO). This is the liquid stevia brand I use every morning.

Healthy Coffee Idea #4: Add real spices for real flavoring.

 

Nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon all have crazy nutrient powers for our bodies. But they also taste really good! And if you’re starting or already have a clean diet, you’ll absolutely start to notice the difference in artificial flavorings. You’ll be able to TELL when they’re present or not in foods. And I promise–the real deal tastes SO much better!

Healthy Coffee Idea #5: Use organic.

 

Organic coffee beans ensures that you’re drinking coffee free of any harmful pesticides. It’s basically the best you can put into your body, while doing a really awesome thing for the environment–win-win!

Healthy Coffee Idea #6: Nix the paper filter.

 

First of all, white paper filters have been bleached, and will still leach those chemicals into your morning drink. If you want to truly supercharge your coffee, opt to use a reusable metal mesh basket. (You can order one if your coffee maker didn’t come with a wire mesh filter.) That also allows the oils from coffee (which contain a lot of the beneficial nutrients you’re aiming to get) to drip right into your cup instead of being absorbed into a paper filter.

We actually have 2 coffee makers at home: 1 for daily that’s a 1 cupper (because I only do 1 regular and then follow up with decaf), and then a full 12-cup one that we have a wire mesh filter for.

Healthy Coffee Idea #7: Add fiber powder.

 

Fiber is one of those things that the average American just doesn’t get enough of, period. (Let alone us busy Mamas that sometimes forget to eat.) To help with this, I use fiber powder in my coffee. I tried the fiber gummies once, and holy Lord the flatulence was off the charts. Absolutely ridiculous, plus it made my gut hurt. Ick. The fiber powder doesn’t do that at all, plus–it’s tasteless! I get mine from Target now because it’s a few bucks cheaper than at the grocery story. I just include it in my monthly Target membership. (SO easy!)

    Interesting article! I’m a coffee lover and these are the best healthy tips I’ve read (good addition to my drinking habit ๐Ÿ™‚ ) Excited to try coffee with cocoa, I love both and I bet their combination would want me to have more. I add honey instead of sugar to some of my food and drinks to make it healthier, for this one I hope I won’t since some cocoa are already sweetened. Thanks so much for sharing, Stella!

      I think the cocoa one is probably my favorite since I love chocolate! But I have tried grinding pecans and putting it in with the coffee grounds before brewing, and that gives it a nice flavor as well! Thanks for stopping by!
